The scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) is another area of research I am passionate about. SoTL research delves into student learning outcomes and ways to maximize student self-efficacy. In particular, blended learning is a teaching method that combines any two classroom instruction methods in such a way that enhances learning outcomes for students. We chose to combine online and classroom components of Severe and Hazardous Weather such that students were able to practice time management, group work, and writing skills in application to problems regarding severe weather. Students in the large enrollment blended learning course worked in small groups of three to build severe weather wiki’s for 50 US cities. Project based learning allows the student to maintain a sense of ownership over course material.
