Current Research

Currently my research focus has shifted to more of an educational aspect. During the Spring 2008, I taught ATMS 120: Severe and Hazardous Weather in a blended format. The blended learning format is taught such that half of the course work is completed in the virtual environment (online) with the remainder of the weekly class time spent in the classroom. Teaching in this format for large science courses has not (to my knowledge) been done and the University of Illinois funded this pilot course through Donna Charlevoix. Donna and I are currently writing three papers that focus on a broad overview of the course structure, evaluation in a blended learning environment and teaching tools for a blended learning course. Projected sumbission date for these papers is December 2008 - March 2009.

Secondly, I am writing an article for submission to BAMS (the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society) that features a survey that I have given to over 1000 of the undergraduate students I taught last year. The title of this paper is Perceptions of Climate Change: An undergraduate survey at the University of Illinois and as it suggests the article will discuss the responses of a large sample of the undergraduate population at Illinois to questions on human induced global climate change. Projected submission date for this paper is September 2008.
